ABOUT L'ÉCHELON
WHO WE ARE
Created in 1993, L’Échelon des Pays-d’en-Haut is an alternative community organization that serves adults experiencing severe and recurrent or transient mental health problems.
In December 1992, a provisional board of directors composed of community members and persons touched by the project met for the first time to lay the foundations for this future Mental health community group
In June 2003, the members of L’Échelon des Pays-d’en-Haut added to the objects of their constitutionthe possibility of offering housing to adults with mental health difficulties and an insufficient income
Since 2016, L’Échelon has been overseeing and supporting Sous le toit de l’Échelon, a social housing resource that accommodates thirty (30) adults living with
mental health problems.
THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
As a member of the Regroupement des Ressources Alternatives en Santé Mentale du Québec (RRASMQ), (here are the values on which we base our approach):
- Each person is considered as a whole
- The relationship, whether between members or between workers and persons receiving help, entertains a fundamental humanistic approach.
- States of distress and imbalance are considered a normal part of the human experience
- The meaning that each person gives to their existence, regardless of their experience, is essential to their life journey
- Self-acceptance as well as the acceptance of others in their suffering, their distress and their differences
- Peer support cultivates a space for voluntary and mutual solidarity between members
- Each member plays an integral part within the alternative approach, infusing it with their own vital energy
